Frequently Asked Questions
Why Tents?
Over 650,000 Haitians are still homeless several months after the earthquake. Port-au-Prince experiences the most rain during the months of April and May. By shipping tents, we are able to provide shelter to many more people quicker and ship many at a time.
How do the tents get to Haiti?
They are laded in international shipping containers at Give A Tent's warehouse facility in Spring Arbor, MI and shipped using an international shipping broker directly to Port-au-Prince.
How do the tents get distributed in Haiti?
The tents are distributed by ICCM partners on the ground in Haiti to our extended Free Methodist church family.
What type of tents do they need?
A preferred tent will have these features:
- Larger family tents are preferred; 4-, 6-, or 8-man tents are acceptable
- A 72" ceiling or higher
- Waterproof floor that wraps up the sides (this is called a bathtub design)
- Carrying bag, rainfly, all necessary poles, ropes, and stakes
- More than one room
- Multiple windows for cross-ventilation
Of course any tent is better than no tent, so please donate what you can.
Where does my donation go?
100% of your donation (less any PayPal fees) goes towards the purchase of the tent.
I have heard about 'rainy season' in Haiti. What is the weather like during this season?
Usual rainfall is 8-12" in April and May. Average temperature is in the 80s with humidity in the 60% range.
